VI Headliner - Glitter and Grunge

Glitterandgrungead Vintage Indie's Featured sponsor Glitter and Grunge is back with a special announcement and a look at a couple more artists from their wonderful site.

Vintage Indie - Any special announcements, upcoming events coming up?

Glitter and Grunge -  We are partnering with Handmade Parade this spring to offer a whole new side to the artists co-op. We'll be introducing a pattern and kit site where our members can sell their original patterns and create kits for people to make their own versions of some of our members signature items. DIY is such a phenomenon right now. Our customers not only enjoy buying finished pieces by our members, they want to be a part of the creations. They want to get their hands dirty and create along with us and we want to help them.

Handmade Parade has been a regional craft fair in Sacramento, but now we are going to be taking the craft fair to the next level and in the next year or so we will be planning an event where crafters can come together and sell their wares, but also learn how to do different things from printing, sewing, fiber arts and more. We are still in the planning stages of this (and the fact that I am now 5 months pregnant with my third child) so our time line is a bit fuzzy. I wanted to shoot for the fall and just tote the little one along, but my husband wasn't as keen on that as I was, hahaha!

Babies or not, we have some really exciting things planned for the coming year!

Claire Bone and Missy Ballance

Norththreads

Browsing Glitter and Grunge is so much fun, each artist is so different and the variety of handmade art and creations keeps you coming back.

I found these adorable Peas and Carrots tea towels from Noththreads by Angela Bate. These are just perfect for spring .

I also fell in love with this Boutique Handmade Vintage Cildren's Sun Dress from Noththreads It's created with many different vintage components including the zipper, buttons and fabric.

Head over to Glitter and Grunge, visit the artist page and get lost in a world of handmade  bliss.

Vintage Fashion Forward - The Cloche by, Gilded Cage Design

Vintage Indie would like to welcome you to the latest Fashion Forward Feature. The lovely and talented  Robin Hand from Gilded Cage Design, is here as our special guest. A talented artist and designer herself, she'll give us an inside look into the history and life of the Cloche, that continues today as a fashion style icon.

Flapper_1 Cloche, the French word for bell best describes the iconic style hat of the 1920’s. While the cloche hat invokes images of carefree bobbed haired flappers, the hat was actually worn as early as 1910 and continued into the 1930’s. As with all great design, the Cloche evolved from a looser fitting, larger brimmed variety of the Edwardian period to the extremely close fit of the middle 20’s. The bell shaped hat now conformed so tightly to the head, it made a bobbed haircut necessary. The Cloche hat of the 1920’s was intended  to be worn low on the brow nearly covering the eyes. This required the wearer to tilt the head slightly back in order to see in front of her. This exaggerated posture caused one to look at the world from down the end of the nose.

Flapper_3

Cloche hats were made from a variety of different material with the most common being wool felt. Felt was utilized in the hats mass production for its ease in conforming to the bell shaped form. Typically, the hat’s surface decoration was kept to a minimum and was held to one side. That side most often was on the right. Feathers, simple bands, flowers and art deco appliqué were popular embellishments. Many women applied their own style through the use of a brooch or diamond clip for adornment.

Flapper_2

This hat became so popular that many couture houses opened atelier shops. These new hat shops allowed customers to purchase complete ensembles from one source.

Boring_sidney_photo_2

Great design endures the test of time and the Cloche hat is no exception. Fall of 2007 showed the cloche hat on many fashion runways. The September 2007 issue of Elle magazine referred to the modern cloche as “the haute accessory of the moment”. This glorious hat can be purchased today from talented milliners like Boring Sidney on etsy. While the style has been altered for current times, the essence is still the same making the cloche hat of the 1920’s a true fashion icon.

Thanks again Robin for a fascinating look into this timeless accessory. Head over to Gilded Cage Design for an amazing line of accessories and Victorian inspired handcrafted items from Robin.

VI Headliner - Retro Campaigns

Retrocampaigns140x140_2 Good morning VI readers! You may have noticed this shiny new button to your left here on Vintage Indie. Today we are welcoming our newest sponsor Retro Campaigns. Fittingly enough on Presidents Day! If you haven't had the chance to check out this cool website, I  think you are going to have a lot of fun as well as land some really great shirts. Presidents Day may have you thinking of politics, this years election and presidents of our history. Many of which held some really great campaigns. Retro Campaigns takes you back in time and has searched high and low to bring you hard to find remembrances of the past and has incorporated them into T-shirts for today's fashion.

A business like this is very interesting to me and I asked the owner Christine a few questions about how she got started  in this kind of T-shirt business.

Vintage Indie:
Can you tell me a little bit about how RetroCampaigns.Com started?
Retro Campaigns: Retro Campaigns launched in late December 2007; I am the founder and owner. I have lots of politics in my background; first as a volunteer during the 1992 New Hampshire Presidential Primary, while I was a college student. I think of that experience as something akin to ‘campaign boot camp’ – there’s nothing quite like it! I went on to work and volunteer on many campaigns in my home state of Nebraska, and worked for a state senator in the Nebraska Legislature before moving to Los Angeles, where I currently live. Though my most recent employment is in the entertainment industry I continue to follow politics very closely. Especially this year, which is turning out to be quite the barn burner!

 Wingsforamerica_retrocampaigns

A couple of years ago I thought it would be cool to own a t-shirt from a past campaign, like Robert Kennedy, for instance, one of my heroes. But after exhaustive searching I couldn’t find anything. Most campaigns back then used buttons, bumper stickers, posters, etc., but not many seemed to use those creative and evocative images on t-shirts. So I thought – why not make one for myself? I created a small handful of simple designs and I got a lot of positive responses from friends, who encouraged me to take it to the next level. I knew a fantastic designer through my job and he was not only excited about the idea as well, but I learned that he specialized in retro/vintage style designs. And that was pretty much the birth of Retro Campaigns!

 Kennedy68women

Vintage Indie: What are some of your most popular shirt designs & their significance to your site.

Retro Campaigns: So some of our shirts are based on campaign buttons used at that time - for instance "Kennedy 68" was an actual button. Some of them incorporate imagery and slogans used at the time but in a new way. For instance, George McGovern's supporters used buttons and other artwork featuring doves, rainbows, the peace sign, etc., so we made some designs including those images. And some of them are original creations, like “Get Clean For Gene,” based on the unofficial campaign slogan from Eugene McCarthy’s 1968 New Hampshire Primary Campaign. That is one of my favorites, as it references the New Hampshire Primary. I really enjoyed writing the bio for that page (I write all the bios on the site). We’ll be adding another 5 or 6 designs within the next few weeks, and aim to add more every month or so. It’s really been a lot of fun to incorporate my love of political history with art and design, and the response has been more than I ever could have hoped for.

The most popular shirt so far is the “Kennedy 68.” I think it’s actually deceptively simple, with just the slightly faded basic green font on a thin white tee. It recalls that era without a lot of bells and whistles; of course, JFK is such a powerful historic figure that you don’t need much more than the name to evoke an emotional response. It makes me glad to think that there are so many people out there who are proud to wear the name of a man who stood for so many positive causes, and that I might be helping them in some small way to express their admiration for him.

Vintage Indie: I see a portion of your profits go to  SaveDarfur.org. can you tell us a little about your connection with them?

Retro Campaigns: From the beginning I wanted to donate a part of the profits to charity, and there certainly is no shortage of worthy causes. I chose SaveDarfur.Org due to their commitment to educating people about the conflict and atrocities in Sudan and pressuring for U.S. intervention. I might change the charity from time to time; I’m also an animal rights advocate and would like for Retro Campaigns to be able to help that cause as well.

 Mcgovernwomenwomens

Today makes a great day to head over to Retro Campaigns and pick up some great memories of the past.  Please let them know you seen them on Vintage Indie!

Special Guest - Cloak and Muff Vintage

Vintage Indie Welcomes Cloak and Muff Vintage shop owner Sandy, celebrating the uniqueness of vintage and what it offers for today's trends & styles!

A bygone era where men were men and women new how to bake a chocolate cake.
Vintage to me congers up a flavor and dimension of color,  charm and history. When I slip on my vintage
grass green wool winter coat I wonder who had the character and charisma to wear this beauty in its
hay day. I envision a bombshell blond with flaming red lips and a flashing smile dashing out the door to
hop in her pals convertible for a swinging night at the jazz club. Cloak and Muff Vintage celebrates the unique quality that vintage has to offer and the history each and every garment holds for the customer.

Cloakandmuff_blackdress

When I spotted this little black number I snapped it up with
every intention to name the piece "Sophia Loren". Envisioning in my mind the sweet smell of a hot summer
night, sitting in an outdoor cafe, sipping wine, looking gorgeous and having all eyes on you.
Part of shopping for vintage is not only the hunt and the find but also the reclaiming of it for yourself. There are no hard and fast rules to wearing it. What it important is how it makes you feel and how it celebrates your individuality. In a day and age where chain retail stores and cheap market togs have taken over, vintage seems to be the way to go if you are looking for quality and attention to detail.

Cloakandmuff_coat

"Mans the Man" is the beautiful wool winter  coat that I see on a well dressed yet ruggedly handsome
gentleman taking his lady friend out to the theater after a good  meal.

Cloakandmuff_handbag

Unleash the vixen in you with this blood red grip. Pair it with some red nails and a tight black pencil skirt for a hot night on the town!

Cmbutton1 At Cloak and Muff Vintage we strive to make vintage accessible to everyone. Enjoy!

A Special thanks to Sandy from Cloak and Muff Vintage for this special celebrating vintage!

Special Guest - Penelopepup's Vintage Clothing

Welcome to another Special Guest Feature on Vintage Indie. Today we welcome Penelopepup's Vintage Clothing  shop for a look at this years fashion trends, by exploring past years vintage! Here's what Penelopepup's shop owner Jen, had to say.

Penelopepups_vintage The beauty of buying vintage clothing is that it allows you to easily keep up with current fashion trends while saving money and keeping your wardrobe uniquely you. Designers are constantly drawing inspiration from the past and you can wear that inspiration for a fraction of the cost of the designer piece while resting assured that the chances of someone else showing up in the same outfit are  slim to none.

Some of this years fashion trends that easily translate to vintage include-

Plaid_penelopepups

Plaid prints-  Usually saved for fall, but big on the runways for spring this year as well. Wear it bold with a vintage fitted blazer or add just a touch with a whimsical vintage plaid cap.

Penelopepups_floraldresses_2

Floral prints-  Big for spring this year from soft and sheer romantic to big, bold and colorful. Vintage dresses are a great place to find amazing floral prints from prim and proper 50's and bold 60's to soft 70's and over the top 80's.

Penelopepups2

Metallic's and sequins- Still going strong in 2008 and it's so easy to add a touch of sparkle with vintage. Go disco glam with a sequined top or add a touch of shimmer with a classic 60's metallic clutch (clutches are big this year as well).

Whether you choose to follow trends religiously, add just a few here and there or create your own, vintage has something to offer everyone. Especially those who like to save money and stay eco conscious while remaining  fabulously fashionable. Happy shopping!

A special thank you to Penelopepup's Vintage Clothing for sharing these fabulous trends with us!
Head over to Jen's lovely shop for a huge selection of wonderful vintage clothing and accessories.

Special Guest Blue Velvet Vintage - Vintage Fashion Trends

Welcome to another Special Guest Feature on Vintage Indie. Today we are visiting with Blue Velvet Vintage owner Theresa who's going to share some fabulous vintage fashion trends for 2008. Theresa is passionate about preserving the past and incorporating it into the modern day. Pull up a chair and find some fabulous inspiration from Theresa and then head over to Blue Velvet Vintage for a full line of vintage fashions to fit into your every day life.

Blue_velvet_vintage_logo_2
When people find out you deal in  vintage clothing for a living, one of the first things they want to know is what the most popular eras or styles are that you sell. It’s always a tough question to answer,  because the vintage market attracts those who choose clothing because they love a specific era,  its classic style or unique look.   So at any given time we’re selling a mixed bag of styles from the 30s right through to the 80s.

Elle_magazine_november07_2

If I had to narrow it down,  the first thing at the top of the vintage top seller list would be dresses.  Designers have definitely caught onto this and have been showing lots of vintage inspired dresses for several seasons now.

(Photo left, Elle Magazine November Issue 07
showing 50s inspired sun dresses for spring.)

Blue_velvet_vintage_swing_dress_3

As far as my business goes, dresses  from the 40s, 50s, and early 60s are always in demand, with 70s a close second. Depending on what vintage style is being interpreted on the runways for a particular season,  it will often reflect in an  upsurge in sales of the authentic vintage clothing from that era.

(Picture left, Janet Russo 50's Style Embroidered Satin Swink Dress Blue Velvet Vintage)

Dkny_springsummer
For instance,  many designers have shown  bright floral print 50s style sun dresses and  70s maxi dresses for their 2008 spring/summer collections. Even though these styles are always popular sellers with us,  we’re already seeing a higher than usual demand for  them,  though it’s only January.

Vlue_velvetvintage_dresses

Photos up our dresses we have at Blue Velvet Vintage, the styles of which we’re seeing a higher than average sales volume.

We’ve also noticed increased interest in very feminine dresses with ruffles and lace, pouffy 50’s prom dresses and anything with Grecian/Roman style draping.

What vintage fashion trend will you follow this year? Special thanks to Theresa from Blue Velvet Vintage for a great feature & offering some fabulous vintage clothing!

Sugarsandwich2

Designer Style Notes:
from Sugar Sandwich owner Katrina

The vintage premise behind the pillow case dress is the idea of the pillowcase dress itself that is vintage. Sewing clothes for children has pulled our family through hard times for generations. My Grandmothers grandmother sewed flour sack and pillowcase dresses, I am simply carrying on that tradition as a way to get by while I raise two children. In their time it was a way of using what you had, and a pillowcase would certainly not lay idly by whilst a "youngin" went without! These days, I have a choice of so many fabrics so I haven't yet used an actual pillowcase, I do however, use what I have and every last bit of it...as you can see by my scrappy dolls!

Sugarsandwich3 Next up from the Sugar Sandwich shop is this perfect pair duo, the Fall Flowers Pillowcase Dress and Matching Scrappy Bear. I just can't get enough of those cute Scrappy creatures. I love how nothing is wasted and your little one will have a special new friend with each purchase. Purchase this outfit today from Sugar Sandwich and get ready for some perfect fall pictures.
