VI News & Updates

Dearest Vintage Indie Readers,

I'm sorry to say that my little family has been hit with a dose of flu like symptoms, a little bit of strep and horrible colds, which has cut my time with you a little shorter than I had planned. We'll be taking some much needed rest to prepare for the upcoming holiday. If I don't get a chance to write to you again before then, I want to wish all of you a Very Merry Christmas and a Blessed New Year. Thank you again for such a wonderful time this year. I have so many wonderful things in store for 2008 and I can't wait to share them with you!

Tis the Season Relic Boutique Holiday Aprons

Ahhhh.... so the countdown begins. Only 6 precious days to the Christmas holiday. Are your stockings hung with care, is your tree gleaming bright? Tis the season for holiday baking and recreating precious family recipes that have been handed down. I've started a new tradition, collecting vintage aprons and some especially for each holiday. This year I started with a great Etsy find and dedicated this one my Thanksgiving apron. What about you? Do you a special holiday apron? If not, today's Tis the Season feature will point you in the right direction. Relic Boutique give you plenty of options!

I love this Red Gold & Wheat one, it says chic and festive. It's handmade with vintage linens, antique buttons and more.

These two are a little more traditional. Poinsettias are making a chic comeback this year as I've seen the holiday trends change. The Vintage Poinsettias one on the left also created by hand at Relic boutique also features grosgrain ties. The Bells apron on the right is so festive and would make a great hostess gift as all of these would.

Head over to RELICboutique they have a fabulous line of "vintage indie" styled items, a huge selection of vintage calendar aprons and so much more!

VI Headliner - Little Empress

Vintage Indie welcomes Little Empress Couture back again with their sponsorship. Elegance for little ladies is an understatement for Little Empress Couture. Simply chic and gorgeous clothing is hand crafted from the finest materials to dress your little one to the "T".

Created from vintage fabric this Vintage Winter Scene Kimono Jacket is so cute, don't you think? Paired with the sky blue pants this outfit is picture perfect.

There are so many precious clothes at Little Empress to choose from, but this has to be one of my favoirtes. This skirt is made from a hand crocheted doily. Fully lined with gold silk it's also paired with with the most perfect peasant style matching top.

Head over to Little Empress today and give a special gift to the little girls in your life. Please be sure to tell them you found them on Vintage Indie.

Weekend Fun - Which Holiday Character are You?

Hey there VI readers! I thought you may be up for a little holiday fun. I seen this little quiz on Jerusalem's blog and thought I would share. Which holiday character are you? I found this to be so funny, because Christmas Vacation is one of my all time holiday favorites. You've got to love the cat who chews the Christmas lights!

VI Headliner - Gajettes

Vintage Indie welcomes our newest sponsor Gajettes. An eclectic mix of vintage and handmade goodness. Gajettes is a perfect example of "vintage green" and I'm so happy to share them with you in today's VI Headliner.

A handmade scarflette from 100% recycled  woolens – cashmere, merino, angora, and virgin fibers. Their gorgeous designs are fresh and perfect for any age. I love the vintage fabric lining that gives each one it's own personality.

Creative, crafty and once again stylish this midnight blue VINYL SCHMINYL tote is completely recycled from vintage and reclaimed fabrics. Perfectly Eco friendly.

Gajettes is a family owned business dedicated to eco friendly designs and has made the commitment to use only recycled materials. Head over to their website and Etsy shop for their newest designs, including clothing, jewelry, accessories and more.

Vintage Collections - Vintage Box Purses

The Readers Collections have been a lot of fun. Today's collection feature is a look into the world of Vintage Box Purses. These come from Diane H. from Houston Texas.

Talk about a collection, Diane's variety of box purses is truly amazing, there are so many great photos to share, so I included a mix of her personal collection as well as her personal collection she's parting with. I hope you will enjoy them and a little of their history as much as I did.

Do you know anything about the history of when box bags first started being produced?

The Box bag, in one form or another has been around for over a hundred years. Looking a my purse history reference material, these bags evolved from 'Ladies Vanity Item's... First you had compacts, then compacts with storage for lipstick..add rouge...add combs...add mad money...add cigarettes and matches...add timepieces and so on. As the functionality asserted itself, the materials from which the
vanity item was made changed...tapestry fabric...leather...Bakelite..metal..plastic..WOOD. In tandem, shape changed as well.

I have a few leather purses from the forties, which are oval

boxes, or six-sided boxes, and a nice velvet one from the 50's which is 12" tall and shaped like a stove pipe. I classify all of these as box purses.

The majority of my collection in the photo's, are from the 1960's -early 70's. Some were commercially produced, others were home-crafted from kits being sold at that time. Enid Collins of Texas, started the craze for the Wooden Box Bag in the early 60's, and they were pricey.
So of course, the knock-offs followed, along with the do-it-your-self themes. (Japan produced many of the Collins look-a-likes.

What made you decide to start collecting these?
It was a natural progression, from the perspective of a minutely
obsessive personality, to get more of what made me happy. After the joy of using my first box purse, (an Enid Collins 'It grows on Trees',
which is a wooden box purse decorated with faux coins), I fell in love. That bag was so uniquely, feminine, that I had to have more. My friends all loved it...strangers would stop me and ask is that a purse?..Where did you find that?'. Of course this was in the early 80s, and women who had owned those bags when they were initially issued
(1950-70's), just smiled. They of course understood.

Diane also happens to be the owner GoodEye, a great vintage shop on Etsy. We'll also be back with Diane a little later to show off her store Houston Vintage & Costume
2609 Blodgett St.
Houston Texas 77004.

Thanks Diane for sharing your wonderful collection with us!

The Daily Swank - Winter Warmer Flannel

After a couple of week of temps in the 30's and 40's yesterday was a very nice surprise. Temps in the high 60's in some parts and in other parts of Greater Cincinnati  they reached a lovely 72 degrees. Can you believe that in December? It was so nice to open all of the windows and air out the house this late in the year. Back to reality today and 40 degree weather and dropping throughout the week. It was chilly waiting for the school bus this morning and I wanted to crawl right back into my flannel sheets. No time for that, so I thought I would share some great vintage style flannel finds for today's Daily Swank!

Just in time for the holidays for a little one is this Vivid Christmas Scarf. Cozy green flannel is paired with a zig zag stitched fabric from Etsy shop Saralynnmo. Head over there for more flannel scarves, sleep ware and more.

Or how about some cozy flannel pillowcases. Adorned with Ric rac and buttons to give it a perfect vintage style. These happen to com from Ric Rac Sally's shop. It a lovely Etsy shop full of vintage and shabby style goodness.

You can't forget the flannel for the little ones. Isn't this adorable. It's a vintage style flannel gown and bonnet from Under a Cabbage Leaf. Strait from the 1930's, this shop is full of fun and old school children's designs. I think you will just love them.

Today's Tis the Season feature is full of handmade delight. Cotton is transformed by hand into whimsical ornaments and creations. Spun cotton an old German technique once used long ago is brought back to life by Crystal the owner of Vintage by Crystal.

The first creation I'd like to share is this Vintage Style Spun Cotton Winter Girl Christmas Box. Perfect for gift giving or adding a little whimsical delight to your own home. She is about 7" tall, including the little box she stands on. Hand spun and wearing a sparkling dress, while she carries an adorable bunch of vintage berries and present. A perfect item to hide that tiny little gift for someone special this year, they'll never guess where it's at!

The next treat for you is this adorable Cotton Batting Stocking. I love the tinsel and the adorable face in this design. There are so many unique creations to look at at purchase. Head over to Vintage by Crystal for these and other holiday treasures.

The Daily Swank - Seasons Greetings

How adorable are these Oh Deer Cards. Photographs of Vintage Deer, that have been printed on Kodak Professional Endura metallic paper and mounted onto cover weight card stock. Blank inside awaiting your personal seasons greeting.

Next up, More adorable photography of vintage objects. These vintage angel images are turned into ornaments as they are mounted on a heavier material that has been covered in vintage children's books.

Lastly, Mr. Snowman hasn't been left out as he's elegantly photographed and turned into the perfect little tags for your gifts.

Head over to Stacy Winters shop, I can't wait to see what she has in store for the new year!

The Daily Swank - Vintage Inspired

What a special treat I have for you today. Today's Daily Swank is right up my alley and hopefully yours too. Bari J. is here with their fabulous handbags and accessories and guess what they are all Vintage Inspired Designs for your Modern Life.

Bari J's specialty is their gorgeous line of bags. Vintage inspired shapes, styles and fabrics are married to create stunning accessories for everyone. Choose from their totes, hobo bags, messenger bags and more. Some are even embellished with vintage or vintage style brooches, buttons & buckles.

I asked  the designer herself what inspired her to create a business solely on the purpose of being "vintage inspired" ?

"I’ve forever loved anything old. I had been making jewelry from vintage buttons and found objects for years and selling to local boutiques, but not very seriously. I started ‘Bari J.’ with handbags. I saw a lot of bags being made from vintage materials which are truly fabulous. But I wanted to have bags that combined the look and feel of vintage fabrics with a slightly modern attitude. Plus, durability is a real concern for me. So, while I don’t use vintage fabric, I look for shapes and new fabrics with an old world feel. All of my fabrics are then professionally backed to give them durability. Each bag has bunches of pockets with specific places for our modern conveniences such as cell phones. In the end, I think I’ve come out with pieces that meet that goal. One person wrote that the bags “translate the line between retro chic and fashion forward.” That’s really what I am going for."

Even though Bari J's focus is mainly on handbags, I just couldn't pass up showing you these. These are her French Velvet Ribbon Brooches. Aren't they gorgeous! Adorned with timeless jewelry components makes each one, one of a kind. Look how lovely they  look on a Bari J. handbag.

Head over to Bari J. for a much larger look into their huge hadbag line and gorgeous accessories. Please tell them you saw them on Vintage Indie.

Tis the Seaon - Top The Tree

VI Headliner - Shy Siren

Vintage Indie welcomes our sponsor Shy Siren, back again this month. I may have mentioned this before, but Shy Siren's shop is anything but ordinary. Their Etsy shop focuses mainly on earrings. Not your average earrings though, chic and spectacular. Each one is hand crafted and given special attention to the way the components breath together and how the flow of light makes them shine.  With new and unique items listed all of the time, you will be thrilled with the selection they offer.

Imagine opening a box with these gorgeous Antiqued Copper Filigree Earrings with Aqua Swarovski Crystals. Now, imagine how your recipient would feel if they were to get this gorgeous duo.

Earrings make the perfect gift and just happen to fit snuggly in a stocking too. They are so versatile and can be worn with many different outfits and color combinations.

Tis the Season - Trimming the Tree

Tis the season once again on Vintage Indie! Is your tree up, is it decorated?  Mine is and it's quite beautiful. My tastes have changed over the years and I lean towards pink and chic, but getting a fake white tree would floor my husband, I think I mentioned talking him into getting one for our bedroom next year. Anyway, if your tree is missing something or your tastes have changed hopefully you'll find something to "spruce" (no pun intended) it up a little.

This is pure vintage indie delight. A vintage sewing pattern turned birdhouse ornament. It's simply darling! You can find this at Little Bitsys.

Look at this dreamy little set. A vintage sewing drawer, with two darling pink bottle brush ornaments, a pink ice cream vase and gorgeous ribbon. A perfect gift for a friend or for yourself. Find this set and more unique ones like it at Blissfull Elements

Lastly today, and Eco-friendly ornament, Dipped Leaves. Maple leaves dipped in silver and some in copper & vintage finish preserving their gorgeous natural shape.  This is from the OSS Animal Medicine Jewelry shop on Etsy. This shop is full of items using natural elements. Funds from this shop are used for a documentary for vanishing honey bees, in production by the shops owner. Visit their website and follow the link to the trailer for a deeper look into their cause.

First up, perfect for the holidays are these adorable Antique Holiday Music Boxes. Each one plays a delightful sound with the turn of a handle. Can you imagine the look on a child's face with this tiny little treasure. I'm just in love with them.

Not sure if this next one would be for you or a little one, but it would look darling on a wooden bookshelf in a child's room. This is a Shabby Old Music Xylophone. I love the chippy look and the colors.
