Waitress National Tour Broadway Cincinnati at the Aronoff

Waitress-logo

Cincinnati on Broadway continues to pump out a great lineup of entertainment and fun, in downtown Cincinnati.

Brought to life by a groundbreaking all-female creative team, this irresistible new hit features original music and lyrics by 6-time Grammy® nominee Sara Bareilles ("Brave," "Love Song"), a book by acclaimed screenwriter Jessie Nelson (I Am Sam) and direction by Tony Award® winner Diane Paulus (Pippin, Finding Neverland).

Inspired by Adrienne Shelly's beloved film, Waitress tells the story of Jenna - a waitress and expert pie maker, Jenna dreams of a way out of her small town and loveless marriage. A baking contest in a nearby county and the town's new doctor may offer her a chance at a fresh start, while her fellow waitresses offer their own recipes for happiness. But Jenna must summon the strength and courage to rebuild her own life.

My mother in law truly enjoyed her first-time Broadway experience and while she thought the lead female role did an excellent job with a beautiful voice, the men almost stole the show.

Finding Neverland on Broadway Cincinnati!

We simply adore Broadway here at Vintage Indie. Especially stories that tell the history behind famous musicians and ones like Finding Neverland that tell the story of J.M. Barrie, the man and writer, behind Peter Pan.

"Based on the Academy Award-winning Miramax motion picture by David Magee, and the play The Man Who Was Peter Pan by Allan KneeFinding Neverland follows the relationship between playwright J.M. Barrie and the family that inspired Peter Pan, or The Boy Who Wouldn't Grow Up – one of the most beloved stories of all time. Directed by Tony®-winner Diane Paulus (PippinHair) with book by Olivier Award®-nominee James Graham, music and lyrics by Gary Barlow (Take That) and Grammy Award®- winner Eliot Kennedy, and choreography by Emmy Award®-winner Mia Michaels (“So You Think You Can Dance,” Cirque du Soleil’s Delirium), this new musical, packed with mesmerizing visuals, irresistible songs and plenty of laughs, is a timeless story about the power of imagination… and spectacular proof that you never really have to grow up."

Much like last night's audience you may find yourself falling for J.M. Barrie's dog Porthos who was originally a St. Bernard. Porthos was quite the attraction on stage, and is the reason J.M. Barrie came to know the Llewelyn Davies' boys.

Peter Pan Jr. in Cincinnati! Presented by The Children's Theatre of Cincinnati

A special thanks to The Children's Theatre of Cincinnati for sponsoring this post and giveaway.

Are you ready for another season of fantastic theatre performances by the Cincinnati Children's Theatre? If so, I've got some exciting news! They're gearing up for the season, and kicking it off with an arrrrrrguably fantastic show! Peter Pan Jr.

In Peter Pan Jr. Wendy, Michael and John Darling meet and befriend Peter Pan when the mysterious boy and a fairy named Tinker Bell enter their nursery in search of Peter’s lost shadow.

Peter whisks his new friends away to Neverland, an island with “hardly any space between one adventure and the other.” There, Peter introduces the Darling children to his fellow Lost Boys, children who – like Peter – never grow up. The crew launches into a great adventure where they encounter Brave Girls, led by the incredible Tiger Lily, and Pirates led by the dreaded Captain Hook, played by Local 12’s own Bob Herzog. Challenges ensue when the Darling children are ensnared in Captain Hook’s sinister plan to seek revenge on Peter.

WICKED in Cincinnati

Image001

Back from its three year hiatus WICKED is in Cincinnati!

Oh my goodness! First, hubby and I are Broadway, musical newbies. Every show we've seen has been completely new to us, and when we found out we were going to see WICKED we didn't know what to expect. Friend's of ours said it was a not to miss show, and they couldn't have been more right.

Based on the best-selling 1995 novel by Gregory Maguire, WICKED, winner of 50 major awards, including a Grammy® and three Tony Awards, is the untold story of the witches of Oz.  It is produced by Marc Platt, Universal Pictures, The Araca Group, Jon B. Platt and David Stone.

Jessica Vosk as Elphaba 3. Photo by Joan Marcus

The Broadway sensation, WICKED, looks at what happened in the Land of Oz…but from a different angle.  Long before Dorothy arrives, there is another young woman, born with emerald-green skin, who is smart, fiery, misunderstood, and possessing an extraordinary talent. When she meets a bubbly blonde who is exceptionally popular, their initial rivalry turns into the unlikeliest of friendships…until the world decides to call one “good,” and the other one “wicked.”

With a thrilling score that includes the hits “Defying Gravity,” “Popular” and “For Good,” WICKED has been hailed by The New York Times as “the defining musical of the decade,” and by Time Magazine as “a magical Broadway musical with brains, heart, and courage.”

My jaw was on the floor most of this show. From the set, to the superb acting, to the amazing voices. Ga-linda (before she changed her name) was absolutely hysterical, and had us in stitches!  I love how the story fills in so many unknowns to the Wizard of Oz. There were so many times where my husband looked over at me and just smiled.

There is just something about a full house at the Aronoff Center in Cincinnati. When the crowd cheers, and people jump out of their seats when the show is over, it leaves you feeling amazing. Those are the best kind of date nights!

Don't wait to get your tickets to see it, shows often sell out!

WICKED will play the Aronoff Center from September 13 – October 15, 2017: Tuesday – Thursday at 7:30PM, Thursday September 14 at 1:00PM, Friday at 8:00PM, Saturday at 2:00PM and 8:00PM, Sunday at 1:00PM and 6:30PM. Tickets start at $42.50. They are available at the Aronoff Center Box Office downtown at 650 Walnut Street, online at CincinnatiArts.org or by phone at 513.621.ARTS. For groups of 15 or more, contact the group sales department at 513.369.4363. Performance schedule, prices and cast are subject to change without notice. Beautiful The Carole King Musical Cincinnati on Broadway

All I could think was if you haven't heard a particular music's story told like Beautiful The Carole King Musical, I had to express somehow what you've been missing. I had to beg you to go see this show while taking your mother, sister, daughter, aunt or anyone who appreciates music.

Beautiful Carole King Cincinnati2

Having listened to my mother growing up, singing songs by Carole King I couldn't wait to ask her to see this show with me. As we sat in our seats and Carole's story came through on the stage, I couldn't wait to tell every Generation X, or Millennial, that you have to see music told like this. You have to get out of your comfort zone, and experience this.

Beautiful Carole King Cincinnati
Julia Knitel as Carole King in the national tour of Beautiful: The Carole King Musical, photo by Joan Marcus

Often times we listen to music and have no idea who wrote the song. We just know that it makes us feel all the feelings. Beautiful takes you into the depths of Carole's heart and shows you her passion for writing as well as the story behind so many of her lyrics.

Long before she was Carole King, chart-topping music legend, she was Carol Klein, Brooklyn girl with passion and chutzpah. She fought her way into the record business as a teenager and, by the time she reached her twenties, had the husband of her dreams and a flourishing career writing hits for the biggest acts in rock ‘n’ roll. But it wasn’t until her personal life began to crack that she finally managed to find her true voice.

Beautiful: The Carole King Musical tells the inspiring true story of King’s remarkable rise to stardom, from being part of a hit songwriting team with her husband Gerry Goffin, to her relationship with fellow writers and best friends Cynthia Weil and Barry Mann, to becoming one of the most successful solo acts in popular music history. Along the way, she made more than beautiful music, she wrote the soundtrack to a generation.

Beautiful Carole King Cincinnati Cast
Curt Bouril as Don Kirshner, Liam Tobin as Gerry Goffin, Julia Knitel as Carole King, Ben Fankhauser as Barry Mann & Erika Olson as Cynthia Weil in the national tour of Beautiful: The Carole King Musical, photo by Joan Marcus

Julia Knitel as Carole King, is absolutely stunning in this role. Her voice is magical, and I believe she captures Carole King perfectly. The rest of the cast doesn't disappoint, Liam Tobin as Gerry Goffin almost steals the show with his own talent, and Erika Olson as Cynthia Weil, opened me up to more music than what I thought I came for. I adored this show, and you will too!

The Illusionists Live from Broadway Cincinnati ends tonight! March 26, 2017

Don't miss your opportunity to see The Illusionists Live From Broadway Cincinnati! This show closes today March 26, 2017 Tickets are available for 1:00 and 6:00pm tonight!

The Illusionists Live from Broadway Cincinnati

The Illusionists whisks your mind away to a place it's never been before. The high energy, entertaining two hour show is mind bending, baffling, and downright crazy. You've got to see it for yourself to believe it. The show is  interactive with the crowd, and keeps you involved and entertained from the start.

I recommend taking your kids 6+ older to this show if they can handle suspense, and sometimes eye covering acts that could be a bit much for the squeamish.

Kevin James The Inventor in The Illusionists Live
Kevin James The Inventor Production photos of The Illusionists—Live From Broadway

Kevin James The Inventor above, has a child-like way with magic. He enjoys seeing the joy and disbelief of his audience and captures your attention with amazing feats of things happening right before your eyes.

He brought a little girl from the audience to capture her imagination, and amazed the entire crowd. He doesn't stop though with innocent illusions. he cuts a man in half. A classic that will leave you questioning everything.

Dan Sperry (The Anti-Conjuror) in The Illusionists—Live From Broadway
Dan Sperry (The Anti-Conjuror) in The Illusionists—Live From Broadway

Dan Sperry, The Anti-Conjuror brings his dry sense of humor, and his mysterious illusions to some of the classics of magic. His performance includes a rabbit, and some birds in his very own special way. He also performs some interesting illusions with his body that had me holding my hands over my face, and peeking through my fingers. Each time, bringing my jaw to a gaping hole of mystery.

Colin Cloud (The Deductionist) in The Illusionists—Live From Broadway
Colin Cloud (The Deductionist) in The Illusionists—Live From Broadway

Lastly for my review, I'm highlighting Colin Cloud The Deductionist. Another favorite of mine and my husbands. We aren't quite sure how he does it, but he involves the entire audience into a mind-bending performance that questions your educational abilities on every level.

His way with numbers, and reading people is something you've only seen in the movies. I'm glad that we got to experience this live and in person. I only wish that our teens were able to join us for the show. They would have been amazed.

Don't wait! Today, and this evening are your last chance to see The Illusionists Live on Broadway at the beautiful Aronoff Center in downtown Cincinnati.

A Craft Connection Brewery Tour is a great way to spend a few hours learning, and enjoying one of Cincinnati’s (and my) most beloved and historic pastimes. BEER!  Craft Connection Brewery tours offers several tour options for groups of 6-14.

Craft Connection Tour Guide Megan

When you choose your breweries, keep in mind that drive time to and from your pick/drop location, and time between breweries is part of your tour!  Plan accordingly, and choose breweries that maximize your time drinking beer, and learning!

Craft Connection Brewery Tour Cup

Our tour guide, Megan, picked us up at our home, which is approximately 10 miles south of downtown, and we were able to visit (comfortably) Nine Giant, Rhinegeist, and The Woodburn.  We could tell, immediately, that Megan was knowledgeable and had a good relationship with each brewery as we entered.  Not only did she fulfill our beer requests, but helped us learn about the brewing process, history of the buildings we were in, and styles of the beers we were trying.  We even had the pleasure of having co-owners of two of the breweries we visited leading part of our tour!

The Woodburn Co-owner Dennis Chacón

While you’re not sipping delicious brews, and learning about Cincinnati’s rich brewing past, present and future, you’ll get to have a great time on the bus.  Bring along for the ride beer, wine, and cider for enjoying on the bus, just keep it there.  No outside beer is permitted in any of the breweries, and no hard liquor allowed!

Vegetarian Chili at Gold Star Chili? Yes! (Giveaway)

As I've recently chosen a vegetarian diet, as in the past year or so, I still long for the flavors of a good, meaty chili. Specifically, of course, the local flavors of Cincinnati Style Chili. I was thrilled when I found out that Gold Star Chili had unveiled a new VEGETARIAN chili.

All of my craving dreams came true when we visited the newly opened Gold Star Chili, located on Montgomery Road in Norwood, in the new University Station near Xavier's campus. With their new sleek finishes, modern decor, and friendly atmosphere, this is not the strip mall Gold Star of my childhood. The kids and I stepped into a new-to-us Gold Star Chili experience, and we were thrilled with the results.

  Gold Star Chili Serves Burgers

Did you know that Gold Star Chili started out as a hamburger joint? I had no idea! With the piles and piles of noodles, chili, and cheese being slung out on plates, my son's eyes opened wide when he checked out the menu and spied their burger.  Chili and a burger, what more could you ask for, other than vegetarian chili cheese fries, of course?  (We'll come back to those fries in a minute).

Gold Star Chili got its start when four Daoud brothers, of Mount Washington, came together to create Hamburger Haven. Along with burgers, the brothers had a chili recipe that was starting to sell quicker than their burgers, so they changed the name.

Gold Star Chili Burger & Coney

And now, for the first time in Cincinnati, Gold Star Chili decided to hire a chef to create the perfect vegetarian, soy free and gluten free chili. When we spoke with the creative chef behind this new chili his excitement for nailing the taste and texture was contagious.

My middle love decided to take the taste test challenge. If you can't tell by the picture they are almost exactly the same in taste, texture, and flavor. They really hit the nail on the head with this creation. My little foodie was able to pick out the vegetarian one from the regular, and after the challenge my youngest love stole the bowl. She loved it!

Gold Star Chili Vegetarian Chili Cheese Fries

It was my turn to order, and I've been craving cheesy chili fries for so long. I was excited to be able to order exactly what I wanted in vegetarian style! Perfectly crispy fries, and that spicy Cincinnati chili with all the familiar flavors were there.  This new creation will be available for a limited time, beginning March 3rd, through the Lenten season.  Enjoy the local fish fries as always, but don't forget to get out to your neighborhood Gold Star Chili for this amazing new creation!

I'm so exited for you! You have the chance to win a $25.00 Gift Card courtesy of Gold Star Chili, just in time for you to taste their new Vegetarian Chili.

There is so much to see, and so much to do in Cincinnati these days! It's buzzing with theater, music, dance and Broadway! Something Rotten's national tour is making it's way downtown to our fabulous city! We were thrilled to have seen this show on opening night.

Something Rotten Cincinnati 2017

"Set in the ‘90s – the 1590s – this hilarious smash tells the story of Nick and Nigel Bottom (Tony nominee Rob McClure and Broadway’s Josh Grisetti), two brothers who are desperate to write their own hit play while the "rock star" Shakespeare (Tony nominee Adam Pascal) keeps getting all the hits. When a local soothsayer foretells that the future of theatre involves singing, dancing and acting at the same time, Nick and Nigel set out to write the world’s very first MUSICAL!"

A cyclone transports Dorothy and her dog, Toto, from Kansas to the technicolor Munchkin Land.  Unfortunately, they land right on top of the Wicked Witch of the East -- not a good thing!  As Dorothy and Toto head down the Yellow Brick Road to find the Wizard and their way back home to Kansas, they meet new friends, each with a wish that they hope The Great Oz can grant for them.  A scrawny Scarecrow needs a brain, a rusty Tin Man needs a heart, and a Cowardly Lion needs courage."

Disney's The Little Mermaid Broadway in Cincinnati

Little Mermaid Cincinnati

A childhood classic, Disney's The Little Mermaid comes to life through Broadway Cincinnati.

TheLittleMermaidCincinnatiBroadway

This show was anything but basic. Our first time ever to see a Broadway show, and I'm so glad it was Disney's The Little Mermaid. Our daughter, four years old, sat through the entire performance in awe of what was happening on stage. From the gorgeous costumes, to the enchanting lighting and sound effects, Cincinnati's Broadway whisks you away to a magical underwater world full of delight and wonder. The only thing she kept saying was wow mommy, this is so neat. My husband who has also never been to a Broadway show was also hooked. He enjoyed it very much, and is looking forward to future shows.

The show's cast and creative team, knew what they were doing when the created this show. No attention to detail was left out and the most wonderful soothing voices were presented on stage. Ursula was simply amazing, her character is witty, and quite bold, with a After the show our daughter chatted our ears off the entire way home, she loved everything.

I can't speak for all home school families, but I know for us, the arts are something to be appreciated and to be involved in from an early age. Cincinnati Pops Lollipops Family Concert series, makes this educational goal, a reality. Exposing children to the symphony early on is a wonderful thing. Fun in the sun with teens at The Beach Waterpark!

Sunday was an absolutely gorgeous day here in Mason, Ohio. The sun was shining, there was hardly any humidity, and the sky was full of beautiful blue and white fluffy clouds. It couldn't have been more perfect. Oh waitt, yes it was. We spent the day at The Beach Waterpark with our two kids and their friends.

The Beach Waterpark Summer 2016

It has been years, I'm talking 15 years or so since I've made it back to The Beach Waterpark. When we arrived memories of The Cliff, started filling my head, as I remembered when I was just fourteen taking my first ride down the five story thrill seeking slide. I rememberd the wave of adreneline, and was really excited to see my kids take a turn.

The Cliff at the Beach Waterpark

The crowds were fantastic all day long. A slow and steady stream of swimmers, and thrill seekers spent the day exploring, and relaxing. The waits for each ride were under five minutes all day. My husband and I found ourselves spending most of our time in the Kokomo Lazy River. A 1200 foot long relaxing tube adventure, slow enough to soak in some vitamin d, while enjoying a few splashes along the way.

Lazy River at The Beach Waterpark

We found ourselves seperated from the older guys most of the day, and felt the atmosphere and crowd was very mellow. We really enjoyed the fact that the rides were fairly close to each other so there wasn't loads of walking on hot concrete from one attraction to the next. The Big Surf Wave Pool, was a short distance from The Cliff. The  750,000 Gallons zero depth entry pool, was a hit with The Beach goers. Plenty of lounch chairs, cabanas and shaded umbrella spots were available for anyone who wanted to catch some rays by the sun. Hubby and I spent a little time here, listening to the live band that played on the stage at Sunset Beach. Here you can find yourself relaxing, and sipping on a wide selection of draft craft beers.

Pricing for food and beer was comparable if not less than other large amusement parks in the area. The dollar hot-dogs were a hit with our guys during the 2:00-4:00 special. Be sure to catch that if you can when you're there, it is near the Sunset Beach stage.

Lazy River at The Beach Waterpark

We didn't have our little one in tow with us on this visit, but we hope to bring her next time. There was quite a few things for her to do and explore. The Big Creek beach is full of water-splashing fun including a  600-gallon dump bucket, and three slides for their excitement. There is also a 1ft pool at the Lil’ Kahunas Waterworks. Plenty of sprays, fountains and geysyers for getting wet.

  The Beach Waterpark

We thoroughly enjoyed our visit to The Beach Waterpark, and plan to visit again next year with our friends.  While looking like an older park, for me it added to the nostalgia, and our youngest son commented on the fact, that it feel like he was in a different time period there. More carnival-like he said, but to him that just added to the charm of it all.

Dine Indie - Close To Home

Eat Indie, Close to Home is our special feature for the week. My husband and I just celebrated our fourth anniversary and to celebrate this weekend was full of pampering, fun, some diamonds and a fantastic restaurant(thanks hubby)! Knotty Pine on the Bayou in Cold Spring Kentucky was our last stop on our romantic weekend getaway.

About five years ago my husband took me to the Knotty Pine on our fourth date and I enjoyed the best blackened halibut steak I've ever eaten. This experience was no different. The Knotty Pine brings a Cajun flair to a not so average menu. Including an array of seafood, craw fish, alligator strips, steaks and burgers. I definitely recommend some of the house specialties prepared by chef John local to Cold Springs, including the spicy gumbo and rice it's so delicious. The "hole in the wall" restaurant holds a glassed in deck that's cozy and romantic even during colder days. They will also mix up some fantastic cocktails for you at their full service bar. Make reservations before you go because they are always booked and a line to get in at the door.

Indulge in some local cuisine and check out Knotty Pine on the Bayou!
