Indie Weddings Month 2012: Photographer Interviews - MI BELLE PHOTOGRAPHY

Please help me in welcoming MI BELLE PHOTOGRAPHY serving Westlake Village, CA. and out of town weddings.

Mccormick_ranch

Can you tell me a little bit about how you got started as a photographer

josh was raised in photography. his dad was a professional. michelle's aunt was also a professional so both of us had strong influences very early in life.

Rockrose_floral

Where are you located? Do you travel for shoots?
we are located in westlake village, ca. In the past we travelled often for many destination weddings. Now that we have 2 kids it makes things a lot trickier, but we will absolutely still travel. This year we have weddings in Napa and Hawaii to name a couple that require travel.

Santa_Barbara_Historical_Museum

What makes you different than other photographers?
we treat our studio as a business and focus on customer service first and foremost. we answer emails and actually return phone calls. Ha ha! (you would be surprised at how many people do not call back leads)  oh, and we take great photos too!

(I want to get married again, so I can do this - Gabreial)

How do you make wedding and engagement sessions different?
we bring a sense of fun and style to everything we shoot. we try to bring something new to every single client so that they all get something original

0344-Edit

Is supporting independent businesses like yours important to you, and if so, why?
absolutely. we love small business. it's great to be able to talk to a small shop and get results versus being lost in the land of automated phone recordings that lead you nowhere.

What types of photography do you offer?
weddings, commercial, editorial, protraits, babies, families, etc, etc, etc.

Indie Weddings Month 2012: "vintage modern day minimalism wedding" Special Guest Kim Ludy from EthanOllie

I am a sucker for a romantic wedding...give me old lace, garden peonies and a big billowing white tent and I'm pretty much smitten.  But lately, I'm all about creating a simple, bare bones celebration, one part organic hippie love fest, one part vintage modern day minimalism.  Because when you get right down to it, your big day is really about you, the love of your life and the great big road ahead.  So here is a simple formula for orchestrating one of the most special days of your lives...Happy Trails! - Kim Ludy

Profess your love...shout it, sing it, write it out for all the world to see.

Choose a place with a sky that stretches on forever.

Wear something simple and pretty, it need not be fancy (go barefoot).

 Invite your closest friends.

Surround yourself with your favorite flowers and Play 'your' song

Exchange a token of eternity

Remember what brought you here in the first place

A special thank you to Kim Ludy from EthanOllie for putting this piece together!

Indie Weddings Month 2012: Crafting & DIY with Contributing Writer Mary Ann Abbott: Sew Simple Gift Wrap

This week will wind down our last week of Indie Weddings Month 2012. We're ending the week with some crafty ideas, special guests and more!

Today, a vintage romantic style way to wrap those wedding gifts by our crafty-diy contributor Mary Ann Abbott.

Sew Simple Gift Wrap

Always on the lookout for ways to be more frugal, I gave up on pricy, mass-produced gift wrap many moons ago. Through the years, I’ve tried several alternatives - from paper bags to maps to newspapers - until I hit on this idea a few years ago: sewing pattern tissue. Thrift shops are a great resource for tragic sewing patterns from the 1980’s and, if you’re a bargain hunter like I am, you can often find patterns for a nickel or dime at yard sales. I especially love when lady luck is on my side and I find vintage patterns for a quarter or less!

Vi1

Since the patterns are full size, there is a lot of “wrapping paper” inside each envelope. I’m always surprised by how frequently the patterns are unused, which means the sheets remain in large, uncut pieces. Personally, I like to showcase the words and directions on the patterns as focal points on my wrapping, so the gift recipients immediately recognize the “paper”. To embellish the gifts, I stick with the sewing theme, most often using vintage crochet thread, buttons, Bakelite buckles, and strips of old fabric. The possibilities are limitless though! Use traditional ribbon, add gift tags with safety pins, or simply stamp the person’s name directly onto the tissue.

Vi2

It’s time to say goodbye to store-bought wrapping paper and hello to a thriftier, more creative way to share your gifts and highlight your love of vintage! It’s really sew simple!

Featurebutton_05Mary Ann Abbott, a collage & jewelry artist and author, lives in the heartland of America where she loves the thrill of scavenging, salvaging, repurposing, and sharing her passions with anyone who will listen! Her work has been seen in several Stampington & Co. magazines, Lark Books publications, and fiction books, but mostly in the homes of her family & friends who get her handmade goodies for every holiday & celebration (and who would probably love a gift card next year). She’d love for you to visit her website A Very Mary Design, but she hopes you’ll be kind as it’s currently in the process of a makeover.

Indie Weddings Month 2012: Photographer Interviews - Glass Jar Photography

Please help me in welcoming husband and wife team, Whitney & Bethany Dean of Glass Jar Photography. Serving Huntsville AL, and out of town weddings.

Glass jar photography favs 2

*Can you tell me a little bit about how you got started as a photographer (s)?
I (Whitney) have been in a couple of band, one of which was the predecessor to "The Civil Wars" with John Paul White, and I was always the photographer or one trying to organize the band photographer stuff...from there I went on a month long travel trip across western europe and fell in love with taking serious photographs and trying to really capture something the way I "saw it", then it gets easy..I met my wife, we got married and we both had a passion for photography and weddings (or love in general) saw an opportunity to have an amazing job together have fun capturing people at one of the happiest and exciting times of their lives.
Glass jar photography pics 6

*Where are you located? Do you travel for shoots?
We live in Huntsville, AL but do almost exclusively travel or (out of town) weddings. so our specialty is travel weddings or better yet, if you like our style and "eye" we can do capture your day anytime, anywhere.
Glass jar photography pics 10

*What makes you different than other photographers?
Thats hard to really pin point from being on the inside...But we try to focus on capturing the emotion of love and the chemistry of people in a romantic and classic way, with a vintage soft focus and color treatment. I think we're different because of the way we see events, people or situations, and then the ability to capture that.
Glass jar photography pics 11

*How do you make wedding and engagement sessions different?
We always try to work with our clients on colors, themes and decor to optimize the images from a session or wedding. It's pivotal in our opinion to have the couple understand what we are trying to capture, and us what they are looking for out of our style. We approach our sessions/weddings very laid back and positive, after all this is suppose to be fun! and if needed coach couples into relaxing in front of the camera and us so that the images are natural, and the couple enjoys the time with us.
Glass jar photography pics 18

*Is supporting independent businesses like yours important to you, and if so, why?
Yes, absolutely. we understand what it's like to either be a start up company looking for a break or even lightly experienced needing some tips or feedback. We think that independent or not, talent is talent, and if your good at what you do you deserve a chance to show that and be supported.
Glass jar photography pics 24

*What types of photography do you offer?
We only really offer one type of photography. Our style obviously, which is laid back, natural light photography that's romantically creative with a vintage/fine art feel, soft color processing.

A special thank you to Whitney & Bethany at Glass Jar photography for sharing more about their business with us.

VI Headliner: An interview with Dahlphotog

0dahl10-R1-020-8A

Vintage Indie would like to welcome our sponsor Dahlphotog's owner and  photographer Kristofor Dahl along with Lauren Agresti Principal Photographer.

Can you tell me a little bit about how you got started as a photographer?
Lauren and I (Kris) both have art degrees. I have a Studio Art degree in ceramics/sculpture and I learned photography so I could take film slides of my work for gallery shows. Lauren has a B.F.A. in photography and comes from a long line of photographers in her family. Lauren tells a great story of her dad giving her a Pentax K1000 when she was 10 yrs old then teaching her how to make darkroom color prints from film around the same age. From film to digital, we have come a long way in the photography world. Now we are finding that many customers love the vintage style film packages we offer, so are are happy to have that solid background in film photography.
VintageIndie_Dalhphotog_1
VintageIndie_Dalhphotog_12
VintageIndie_Dalhphotog_10

Where are you located? Do you travel for shoots?

We are located in Orange County California but we travel all over the country for weddings and other events. For example, we are going to both San Francisco and Detroit to shoot weddings this year.

What makes you different than other photographers?

I think that we are both real artists. We choose to occupy our lives with art in all of its forms. We have our own artistic endeavors and projects we constantly work on outside the wedding and event industry. We shoot commercial and lifestyle/magazine work in addition to the fine art and wedding business. As a couple we share the experiences and joy of being photographers in a very real sense. We have an aesthetic, we work at it all day. As an artist you know when you have a good aesthetic and you go through the growing pains of developing your work into something beautiful. I think that really comes through in the weddings we shoot.
VintageIndie_Dalhphotog_9
VintageIndie_Dalhphotog_8

VintageIndie_Dalhphotog_7

How do you make wedding and engagement sessions different?
We try to stay away from the boring overly traditional posing and allow the client's personalities to shine through in the photos. In every shot we attempt to use dynamic ideas and lighting to achieve something that is in and of itself beautiful. We use a mix of film and digital and whatever else we can to make each image tell a story. We try very hard to not over edit and over work an image in the computer, allowing the image to come alive with minimal post-processing.
VintageIndie_Dalhphotog_4
VintageIndie_Dalhphotog_5

Is supporting independent businesses like yours important to you, and if so, why?

Yes, that is where the best artists are! In every aspect of life, the people making things for self-expression their own way everyday -- these people have always been the innovators of the world.

VintageIndie_Dalhphotog_11

What types of photography do you offer?

Our services include wedding photography, children/family/maternity portraits, commercial work, and photos for print or web. You name it, we shoot it -- as long as it is based in art!
A special thanks to Kristofor Dahl for supporting Vintage Indie and for sharing your passion for your independent business. Please visit Dahlphotog for pricing and more of their gorgeous photography!
